The rhythm of our past, gives me a blues for today. Groove with me as I travel back down musical airwaves and join up with my favorite artists of R&B. Come and see who's next on the R&B Express...

Remembering Rhythm & Blues: October 2006

Like Prince Said in '92, Money Don't Matter 2 Night

Walking out the office this afternoon, I couldn't believe that it was totally dark. Where did the daylight go? It seemed like God took all the sunshine from this afternoon and stuck it into His back pocket -- But I like it. In fact, one of my fondest memories involves the nightlife. Growing up, my family would take extended outings to one of the best damn restaurants ever: Po'Folks. Back then the nearest Po'Folks was in VA (It's closed now.), but my dad would drive us all the way out there to 'throw down' (Damn do I miss those homestyle veggies and dee-lishus dee-serts!) and man, did we 'throw down'. Once we had our fill, my dad would give us 'kiddies' a real adventure by taking the long way home through downtown DC. I loved seeing the monuments and being amazed by all the 'people of the night' chatting on corners or lounging on porch stoops. I always felt so inspired to write poetry and stories after our rides. On one particular night as we were riding through NE, I remember my dad playing the song Money Don't Matter 2 Night by Prince. Seeing all the rumble and decay of what used to be thriving neighborhoods and hearing the words...

Money don't matter 2 night (no, don't matter)
It sure didn't matter yesterday (yesterday)
Just when u think you've got more than enough
That's when it all up and flies away (flies away, flies away)
That's when you find out that you're better off
Makin' sure your soul's alright (make certain that your soul's alright)
Cuz money didn't matter yesterday,
And it sure don't matter 2 night

...Made me realize that you don't always have to go out of state to travel somewhere. That moment in time of just listening to Prince and riding around DC with my family is better than any trip to anywhere. Memories like this make me really enjoy listening to Prince's music, from songs like Sign O' The Times to Do Me, Baby to Adore to his latest jam, Black Sweat. Yet, I've always remained so closely tied to the ironic memory of 'Money Don't Matter 2 Night' which jumped into my mind today as I climbed into my car to go home. Passing by all those old style streetlights in DC, it seemed only fitting that my ode to the "Fall Forward" of daylight savings would be that beautiful song...

It's One Of Those Love Songs From Xscape

I'm grown and HAPPILY married so consider this a warning for any of those who just can't get down with honest talk...

It's no secret, but I totally enjoy having sex. I like being controlled and I like being dominated, but above all else, I love the intimacy of lovemaking. Yeah, it's nice to be single and 'testing the waters' but nothing compares to the intense pleasure and love that can come from pleasing a mature relationship. You know, when you've come to a place where you know exactly what the other person likes? Well, tonight (or this morning since it's after midnight) I'm looking for just the right song to convey my need for my baby tonight. It's not easy to find just the right sexy song, but as I'm running through my SEX ME playlist on my Ipod, I find just the right song -- Xscape's Softest Place On Earth! Now, ladies and gentlemen, this song right here is so damn relaxing, but HOT! Check out these lyrics:

[Verse One (LaTocha):]
It's a glowing little feeling,
Like a summer sun that slowly rises,
On a new horizon of love.
And it's more exotic than Jamaica,
Or the rain that falls in Costa Rica,
Like a waterfall to the sea,
So tell me baby...

[Bridge:]
Do you wanna fly, I can take you high,
Come ride on these midnight skies.
If you're looking for Heaven's only door,
You've got the key baby open me.

[Chorus:]
Baby won't you come inside,
I'll take you on a fantasy ride.
Take a journey through my universe,
My love's the softest place on earth.
You don't have to pull the blinds,
Let the neighbors lose their minds.
Baby you can be the first,
Inside the softest place on earth.

[Verse Two (LaTocha):]
Overflowing with emotion,
I will make you feel so sensual,
When I touch you, you will lose all control.
Come on baby, kiss me all over,
From my mountains to my valley low,
There's an ocean of love just for you,
Just for you.

[Repeat Bridge and Chorus]

[Break:]
So no more dreaming,
Your body's steaming,
You want it baby, this is your night.
I'll keep you rising, I'm fantasizing,
I want it so bad I'll do what you like.
We can do it in the movies,
Or in my jacuzzi,
Or maybe Central Park.
So if there's any doubt,
To what I'm all about,
So tell your friends I'm turning you out.

[Repeat Chorus]

Yes indeed, I think it's time to shut this laptop off. Pease & Blessings ya'll... :)

Betcha By Golly Wow, It's The Stylistics

I am such a loser tonight. I mean I know I'm A Big Girl Now, but tonight I'm a big ass baby -- Thanks to The Stylistics. Looking back on it, I never thought that getting married would really change my life all that much, I mean, my hubby and I would still do everything we wanted to do when we wanted to do it... right? Well, WRONG because If You Don't Watch Out life can slowly change right before your eyes. And yes, we've gone through the Break Up to Make Up phase, but three years into this marriage, I find that I still can't get enough of this man! O how I wish we could have the opportunities to just go to the movies again or lay up in the bed doing nothing but talking, laughing, and dreaming of our tomorrows. As I'm listening to The Stylistics sing You Make Me Feel Brand New, I can't help but to feel all emotional and warm inside. I just love how the voices of Russell Thompkins, Jr., Herbie Murrell, Airrion Love, James Smith, and James Dunn all blend together into one beautiful soulful sound. Shoot, before I know it, Betcha By Golly Wow, I'm all over my husband's ear singing another one of their hits...

You might say that all I do is dream my life away...
I guess it's true, 'cause I'm Stone in Love with You

You Are Everything

Please Don't Disturb The System's Groove

Okay, I like Silk, but what the hell were they thinking when they decided to cover Don't Disturb This Groove on their new release Always And Forever? Shoot, I tried to give them a chance, but their voices (minus Lil G) sound absolutely horrible on my all time favorite song, which seems to have a history of being used by other artists....

The greatest triumphant title of The System was the album Don't Disturb This Groove in 1987 [with] the song of the same name. It placed #1 in R&B charts and the title became a #3 in the Hot 100, [but] Mic Murphy (vocals, guitar) and David Frank (keyboards) disbanded in 1989 and came again together in 2000 with the album ESP.

"Don't Disturb This Groove" was sampled by the late 2Pac for his 1996 song "Lost Souls" ... And former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham's song titled "This Groove", contains an interpolation of "Don't Disturb This Groove".

But don't get me wrong, I liked Tupac's song and Victoria did a okay job, yet Silk violated with their rendition!!!! Shoot, sometimes it's better to make something fresh than to try and recycle the grooves of The System!

If You're Serious, Riff, So Am I....

I know I've been away for a minute, but I come back singing a song that reminds me truly of what I've been feeling with regards to all my blogs. Running these things ain't easy, but damn the joy they bring me is incredible
and it sure beats going to any head doctor! So, you guys remember Riff? Well, their song, If You're Serious, is my one hitta quitta and in case you need it, here's some background from a reviewer on Amazon.com:

After making a notable appearance in the 1989 film 'Lean On Me,' Riff went on to release their debut album in early 1991. Their first single, "My Heart Is Failing Me" was, and still is a sparkling midtempo ballad that definitely foreshadowed relatively recent boyband creations like "Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely" by the Backstreet Boys and "This I Promise You," by Nsync. However, Riff is probably most fondly remembered for "If You're Serious," another ballad that defined the summer of 1991 along with Color Me Badd's "I Wanna Sex You Up." The final single from this album was a remix of "Every Time My Heart Beats," an uptempo that is so peppy, it's hard not to smile when listening to it.

Well, I'm 'seriously' in love with blogging and I'm 'seriously' in love with this song. Shoot, they just don't make songs like they used to and with a mellow chorus like this...

If you're serious
If you wanna make it last
If you're serious
Then this is all I ask
Just believe in us
All we have to do is try
If you're serious

So Am I

I ain't ashamed to say that I'm a PROUD owner of this CD!

A Peek Into My Past Emotions With H-Town

Emotions make you cry sometimes, emotions make you sad sometimes, emotions make you glad sometimes, but most of all they make you fall in love...

Sunday, February 6, 2000 9:08 PM

Dear God,
I miss him and I can’t seem to shake him from my mind. Every day and moment, I’m thinking about him, but really gets to me is the trip to Florida that we took. Each time I think of it, it makes me go crazy. I miss those times and the memories are endless. Like when we first got there, we were so horny and couldn’t wait to get into each other's pants. The first thing we did was have sex and it was GOOD. I know that we will go on another trip together, it’s just a matter of when. I want to go NOW. I MISS the times we shared and I wish he would come home. I can’t wait to move out because I hope that it will bring a stronger side out of me and him. I wish he would just come to me and let me take care of him again. I am his RIB. I’m cold and lonely and I need some affection. Why do we play so many games with each other, why can’t we just say I need you, you need me, let’s just do it and be together? I’m so tired of waiting around and letting time pass us by. I feel so sad and depressed. I sleep the weekends away and nothing happens in my life. Is this what I have to look forward to? It’s looks as if I won’t get married to him and it’s been so long, I don’t even think he even feels the same as me. I’m so confused and tired of it all. I just want it to end, but it’s bittersweet. Does he think about being my husband and making love to me late at night? Our first child and house? I do and it’s overwhelming me! I can’t focus when I think about him and the past? I have to focus and think about all the things I need to accomplish. I’m horny now and I want to please him, but it’s hard when he won’t give into the love that we have. I didn’t mean to cry on the phone today, but the pain and hurt came back hard. I asked him to come home and he said no outright. That hurt me and more hurt that comes my way, the more I feel like I have to run from him. The X-Files show is the bomb to me! Everything’s gonna be all right, I just have to keep thinking about the future and not let anything stand in my way. I love you, Jesus, please let me and _____ get back together.

A Season of Change With Expose'

I'm seriously at the Point Of No Return, but Let Me Be The One to say that I've been meaning to come here and write about Expose since I wrote this. What You Don't Know is that I just haven't had the energy. Honestly, I don't have a crazy story to tell regarding this group, but Tell Me Why I'm enjoying the blah mood that their Seasons Change brings????

Big Bub - Telling Me Stories

Sometimes there's just this ONE song that an artist/group has that will always be their signature hit. Regardless of any other song they might put out, they can't seem to shake that ONE song that gave them a touch of fame. Well today (or tonight, depending on where you're reading this), I present to you...

A One Hitta Quitta:
Big Bub - Tellin Me Stories

Yes, Bub has other great songs AND he has helped many other artists with their career (Artists like 'Luther Vandross, The Jacksons, Boy George and songs like My Prerogative for Bobby Brown, Gotta Believe for Mary J. Blige'), but this song is so beautiful and it reminds me of a time when music told some real hardcore stories. It took me a long time to figure out that Big Bub was talking about his girlfriend being on drugs, but once I did, I had a new found respect (and love) for his songwriting skills. So, enjoy and check out Big Bub's myspace page for new tracks off his upcoming CD, Tug of War!

Getting Unplugged With Uptown

Lately, I've had the strangest feelings. Like right now, I'm stuck in between melancholy and lust and it is this feeling that has brought me to the Uptown MTV Unplugged album. This album, which displays the talented artists of the now defunct Uptown Records, was one of the places I went when I just didn't know how I wanted to feel. This albums' mixture of funk, blues, and hip-hop have truly helped to take me on a musical ride when my crazy moods start to kick in. So, check out some video of one of the best MTV Unplugged sessions:

What's The Deele With Two Occasions?

A summer love is beautiful but it's not enough to satisfy emotions that are shared between us. A winter love is cozy but I need so much more it just intensifies my wants to have a love that endures...

Why?! Why couldn't I have had an obsessive (preteen) love like this in 1987? Don't get me wrong, I had my crushes, but with Two Occasions, it was a different kind of love. I mean, is this song describing an intense love that will endure all seasons or is this more about a stalker-ish type of love that will bug the hell outta you for all seasons? (Things that make you go hmmm) Either way, this song reminds me that throughout my life, I've always lived the fantasy of letting the music (by male artists!) BE my boyfriend. I wanted so much to feel like this or have someone feel this way about me. Yet, I didn't have to worry about being lonely for too long because quicker than you could say Sweet November, I'd put my headphones on and my 'boyfriend' would take me to the Shoot Em Up Movies and during the gunfight we fell in love...

Somebody Loves You Patti LaBelle!

I'm always trying to prove to myself that I can sing and as much as I think I can hit a couple of notes, there's one particular artist that always take my vocal cords to places they never knew they could go. That artist is Ms. Patti LaBelle, honey! This beautiful lady has been in the music business since 1962 and has continued to reign supreme as one of R&B's greatest divas. Here's some background:

Patti LaBelle (born Patricia Louise Holt on May 24, 1944 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an R&B/soul singer who fronted two moderately successful groups before achieving success as a solo artist in the late 1970s and in the process has influenced a new generation of female singers. She is known for her strong vocals and her signature high-octave vocal belting. She has been largely compared to Aretha Franklin during the 1970s, but her distinguishing vocal range remains unique and recognizable, and she is widely regarded as one of the greatest vocalists of all-time by such industry publications/media outlets as Jet Magazine, BET and VH1. Her biography Don't Block the Blessings, remained at the top of the New York Times best seller list for several weeks. In addition, she is also a bestselling cookbook author.

O, the memories that are invoked when I hear her voice. I remember on my first vacation to Disney, I serenaded my hubby with If Only You Knew and I remember riding in the car with my mom as she consistently played The Right Kind Of Lover over and over and over again. Not to mention crying my eyes out to When You've Been Blessed (Feels Like Heaven), which is such a BEAUTIFUL song. Yes indeed, Patti LaBelle is a living legend who continues to inspire me today!

Losing Control With Silk

All damn day, I've been listening to music thanks to the fact that I've had to reload my mp3s into my Ipod (the My Book where I hold all my songs has been lunching on me). So, as I'm making my way through the 3000+ songs on my barely full Ipod, I HAD to stop when I found a few songs from Silk's 1992 album, Lose Control. More specifically, there's this song, I Gave To You, which is a remake of a classic Delfonics' song and my O my, these brothers did some justice to this baby!!! My goodness, I love the arrangement of their voices, the rhythm, and I especially love the begging that they do at the end. How can I woman say no to a man playing this joint??? I get tears in my eyes just listening to it... (Yea, I know, I'm crazy!)

Boy, does this album bring back memories of spending some crazy nights crying in the bathroom over some fool or staying up late talking on the phone like I was grown. LOL! Matter of fact, songs like Lose Control, Freak Me, Girl U For Me, and It Had To Be You helped to shape the woman that I am today. As these fellas sung their hearts out about love and lust, I enjoyed imagining the love I would grow to give my future husband. Shoot, when you're in middle school and trying to find your way, this album became my introduction to relationships. My appetite was peaked for what would come MUCH later in life -- true love and incredible sex.
