Tina Turner Is Simply The Best

Tina is a true legend! We all know the amazing obstacles Tina has overcome to be the great leading lady that she is today and for me, she is such an inspiration! But just in case some may not know, here's a little background...

Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939 - some sources say 1938) is a Grammy Award-winning American pop/rock singer, Buddhist and occasional actress. She was born in Nutbush (now Brownsville), Tennessee, of African American, Navajo, and Cherokee ancestry. At age 16, she moved to St. Louis, Missouri and became well-known for her high energy performances with The Ike and Tina Turner Revue during the 1960s and 1970s. She is, however, best known for her solo comeback in the mid-1980s. Turner is noted for her overpowering stage presence -- long legs, big hair, and raspy voice. She is often referred to as the Queen of Rock & Roll. She possesses a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the 1990s. In addition, she is a member of the St. Louis Walk of Fame. She is also the winner of seven Grammy Awards thus far. Her boyfriend is German record executive Erwin Bach. Turner and Bach live together in Switzerland.[source]

She has such a musical history with songs like River Deep Mountain High, We Don't Need Another Hero (a personal fave of mine- gotta love the Mad Max movies!), Private Dancer, Goldeneye, and Open Arms. I often listen to her 1989 song, The Best, to get me motivated some days and I can't walk away from it without feeling just a little bit better about life!

Enjoy this little video trilogy of the forever beautiful Tina Turner! Go on girl! At 60+, you still got it going on!!

Shalamar: Makin It A Night To Remember!

Who doesn't want to hit the streets and have a night on the town when they hear Shalamar's 1982 hit, A Night To Remember?? Granted the song is about rekindling love, but all I can seem to think about is grooving on the dance floor when I hear it, but we all know that, with Shalamar, everything feels even better the second time around!

Learning More About Love From Shai

First, let's start with a little bit of history...
Shai was formed at Howard University in Washington D.C. The four members, Garfield A. Bright, Marc Gray, Carl Martin, and Darnell Van Rensalier, belonged to the same fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, and decided to take a chance at turning their hobby of singing into a career. Moving to New York City, New York, the foursome tried to secure a record deal, but they couldn't find any takers. With their money running out and their future looking bleak, the members of Shai took a chance on a radio contest that radio station WPGC was sponsoring. They chose to perform a song that Carl Martin wrote, "If I Ever Fall in Love," which they sang a cappella. The song won the contest and began finding airplay on WPGC. Other stations soon followed, and suddenly the record labels came calling. After signing with Gasoline Alley, Shai began putting together its debut album.[source]

Wayyyy before Apple Ipods, Rhapsody subscriptions, and Napster, if I wasn't outside racing dudes on bicycles or finding adventures in the lakes and neighborhood parks, you would find me in front of a boombox taping songs off WPGC 95.5 and making mixtapes. Boy, living in the DC metro area in the 90s was some good times and being young and very much the tomboy, I found more of my girlish ways bubbling to the surface when I heard Shai's debut hit, If I Ever Fall In Love. Their harmonies almost commanded a lady's ear to hear their words...
If I say that I could be your one and only
Promise, that you'll never leave me lonely
I just wanna be the one you need
Oh Baby
I just wanna be the one to serve you
Sometimes I feel as if I don't deserve you
I cherish every moment that we share

My word! This song had me thinking all new thoughts, much deeper thoughts... You mean boys can be more to a girl than just a bicycle buddy? :-)

Rose Royce: Doin' What Comes Naturally

This group made working at the car wash look really cool with their funky beats and mellow treats. Their song, I Wanna Get Next To You, is another one of my favorites, yet there are so many to choose from!!! Original songs like I'm Going Down, I Wonder Where You Are Tonight,Do Your Dance, and another all time classic, Wishing On A Star, have helped to make my day or purge my soul when things just weren't going right, especially with their song, Love Don't Live Here Anymore... It's like this song should have came with a warning...

"This song has been known to encourage strength at times of heartache. In some rare cases, it has also been proven to make listeners leave their partners. Therefore, if you are having problems in your relationship, DO NOT PLAY THIS SONG!"

Inside The Secret Garden With Quincy Jones

Do I really need to say anything about this song, Secret Garden, except put this song on and BAM - You've just set the perfect mood for love. Whether its conversation or something else... This song is just beautiful. My male readers, take note to what these men are saying...

I wanna read your mind
Know your deepest feelings
I wanna make it right for you
Baby, show me, let me
Share the mystery, ohh

Now, that's showing some concern! LOL! Mr. Jones is such the legend! I first became familiar with his music when I heard an instrumental song he did for the We Are The World album, I think it was Imagination?? Gosh, I wish I could remember, but at any rate, when I listened to Q's Jook Joint back in the late 90s, I learned even more about his skills. I would be remiss to not mention the heavy sampling of Soul Bossa Nova done by Austin Powers and later Ludacris! From a composer, producer, arranger, and musician of numerous hits, is there nothing this man can't do!

I'm So Sure of Mr. Al B. Sure

My heart felt another HUGE preteen crush when I placed my eyes on Mr. Albert Brown aka Al B. Sure. I would purposely steal my older sister's cassette tape so that I could learn every word he breathed over new jack swing beats. Songs like Nite And Day and... Aw forget it, I loved all the tracks on his 1989 release, In Effect Mode! :)

A Lesson From Jody Watley

I have a question, but I'm going to let Jody Watley ask it for me...

Have you ever been stabbed in the back
By someone you thought was really cool
Did they steal your lover or was it money
Or was it lies they told

Friends by Jody Watley was one of my musical lessons about the shade certain people can throw your way. Going through the turbulent preteen-teen years, I learned really quick about how FAKE people can be. One particular story that sticks out in my mind is the time I was walking with my so-called boyfriend to the bus stop after we just wrapped up one of our fooling around sessions (don't look at me like that-it was all CLEAN fun!). My so-called "friend" must have spotted us from only God knows where and made it her point to run all the way up the street to catch up with us. When she reached us, she proceeded to pick a fight with me about wanting to see my hair, which was under a scarf. She wanted to see if it was "messed up"...

So-called friend: Where ya'll coming from?
Me: None ya.
So-called friend: Well, why your hair under a scarf?
Me: Girl, because I need to do it. We're were in the middle of a conversation, (name omitted to protect the dumb). What's up? ...

But before I knew it, homegirl had reached up and pulled my scarf off, exposing my bed head to the world. WTF? I can't even lie, I can laugh about it now, but back then I was HOT HOT HOT! I just stood there bewildered like, what the hell was all that for?! So-called boyfriend starts pushing me up the street while so-called friend continues to run her mouth behind us. WHYYYYY? At any rate, my girl Jody couldn't have sung this shit any better than what she did. I dedicate this video below to all the nasty, down-low, hatin', so-called friends out there! Take heed to what Ms. Watley got to say....

CeCe Peniston: Finally!

I'm in the mood for the voice of Ms. CeCe Peniston. Every time I think of her, I hear that song:

Finally it has happened to me, Right in front of my face
My feelin's can't descri-ibe it, Finally it has happened to me
Right in front of my face, And I just cannot hi-ide it

That 90s beat starts to whip my hands in front of my face and before you know it, I'm doing all these crazy "vogue" moves! LOL! Boy, did she have some feisty songs, especially the song, Keep On Walkin'!! Gosh, that song made me want to step all over some man's foot as I bounced right out of his life singing....

Keep on walkin',
I ain't talkin to ya anymore
You can just go on
Keep on walkin'

Can't you just imagine me rolling my neck? LOL!

Work It, Teena Marie...

Beautiful voices come in any color, but my girl Teena Marie is holding it down as "the reputed queen of blue-eyed soul"! She brought me so many hits, it's really hard to say what my favorite song is, but with songs like Portuguese Love, Young Love, Square Biz, and Deja Vu (I've Been Here Before)... You can understand the dilemma. Anyway, I often feel naked to the world like my girl T when I'm writing all these blogs, but writing to songs like Ooo La La La and Crocadile Tears makes it all just flow right into the background as her voice enters into my ears. Teena is workin it hard and although Rhapsody doesn't have one of her most recent jams, Still In Love, I'm satisfied with what they do provide - LOL! I've got yo number, T, so call me girl!

**** Now you know I had to do AT LEAST two videos for my girl!****

Tyrese: It's Black Ty To You Girl

Before he was "waist deep" in movies, Tyrese aka "Jodi" aka "Black Ty" was romancing my heart with his ode to me, Sweet Lady. Lately, I've been wondering if he will ever give his girls and guys another banging love album to groove to? Who else could give us the Signs Of Love Makin' or tell the ladies how to treat their guys like the men that they are? Shoot, how you gonna act like this brotha doesn't have true talent! I loooove yooou, Jodi.... :)

Simply Red: Holding It Down For Years To Come

How long can one song stay in a person's mind? A month? A year? Two years? Well, I'm a living witness that Simply Red's song, Holding Back The Years, has managed to stay in my mind, off and on of course, since it became a hit in 1984. Granted there have been some other great songs by Mr. Red, like If You Don't Know Me By Now, You've Got It, and A New Flame just to name a few, but the pure emotion in what I believe to be his "signature" song made me want to NEVER let go of this melody!

Kem: Keepin It Mellow

It was only a matter of time before my life brought my ears back to hear the smooth sounds of Kem. When things seem a bit overwhelming, I often turn to his albums to help me unwind and relax. Kem brings a bit of heaven on songs like I Can't Stop Loving You, I Get Lifted, Miss You, and one can't forget Love Calls. I must say, I feel very much refreshed to take on whatever comes my way after listening to Kem.

Toni Braxton: A "Go To" Girl For Love Songs

My husband and I had an argument the other night, one that has only helped to make our relationship that much stronger. You see, Mr. D is cheating on me. Now before all my female readers get up in arms, let me explain. For the past two years, I have had to withstand being somewhat second to his main lady, his Honda CBR1000 motorcycle. Boy, does that bitch get on my nerves, but that's what he does to release stress... he rides... and rides... and rides... So the other night when he strolled in the house at close to midnight, he found me eyes squint with a little ditty rolling in my head:

Love Shoulda Brought You Home
You Home last night
You shoulda been with me
Shoulda been right by my side
Baby
If you cared anything for me
Then love woulda brought you
To me last night

As he went into his spill about running behind and as my nostrils filled with that irritating smell of gasoline and burnt rubber, I couldn't help but to start steaming. As much as I love me some him, I wanted to throw that helmet off our deck, but then he cracked that half-grin, smothered me in his arms, and followed each apology with kisses to my cheeks. I suddenly lost the ability to breath again... At that point, I had no choice but to let go, let it flow, let it flow, let it flow....

Stone Cold In Love With Angie Stone

Seems you're much too busy for me and I can't stand it, seems you're much too busy these days and I can't handle it... Who was this sultry voice declaring her irritation with the busy male friend? Well, the lead singer for the 90s group, Vertical Hold, was none other than Angie Stone and although this group disbanded, I still found myself lingering over Angie's beautiful voice, which for a few months back in 2000, helped to wake me every morning with the lovely intro, Freedom. My sunshine has come and I'm all cried out and there's no more rain in this cloud... This song was my anthem for a long time when my boyfriend (later husband) and I were separated and Coulda Been U was another jam that had me singing happily through tears in the mirror. Ms. Stone gave each word feeling and true sista emphasis. I love the way she brings her voice to such songs as Stay For A While, Just A Pimp, Bone 2 Pic (Wit U), My Man, and I Wanna Thank Ya. Check out the video below from another one of my all time favorite Angie jams...

The O'Jays: Telling It Like It Is

Where was I the first time I heard that all too familiar guitar riff of For The Love of Money? The memory escapes me right now, yet I feel so connected to this melody; Money is the root of all evil, give me a nickel, brotha can you spare a dime, money can drive some people out of their minds....

With the O'Jays, I don't have a care about money because their music has made my life richer with such songs as Backstabbers, Family Reunion, and Give The People What They Want. Time seems to hit the pause button when these songs hit the speakers and through their songs of watching yo pocketbook and covering yo back, these men gave the world some SERIOUS slow jams! Oooo weee, my spine tingles with the thoughts of their voices playing over sexy bass lines. Their playlist reads like a PSA on love: Let Me Make Love To You, Stairway To Heaven, Forever Mine, and the MOTHER of unified love, Cry Together are just a few! Just like we enjoy the pleasure, we have to stand the pain... o let me kiss your eyes, let me wipe those tears away, o let me hold you close, let's talk to each other, I wanna hear whatcha gotta say... Yes, there's no argument, my love affair with this group will never end!
